The Klaus Roofing Way: Achieving FORTIFIED Roof™ Compliance Through a Patented Installation Standard

FORTIFIED Roof and the Klaus Roofing Way both start from the same foundation: a fully back-nailed deck, sealed seams, protected edges, wind-and-impact-rated shingles, and code-compliant ventilation. Side by side, the requirements line up closely.

Deck fastening is identical — 8D ring shank nails across the entire deck, following the FORTIFIED fastening schedule (4" O.C. in hurricane zones, 6" O.C. in high-wind zones).

For seam sealing, FORTIFIED calls for 4" modified bitumen tape; the Klaus Roofing Way uses MFM Seam Tape (Sealoron XT Roof Deck Tape is currently in FORTIFIED testing and will replace it once approved). Edge protection is handled with IKO EdgeSeal Roof Starter around the full perimeter, meeting FORTIFIED's requirement for a fully adhered starter strip. Shingles are IKO Dynasty, six ring shank nails each, rated to the required ASTM D3161 Class F / D7158 Class H wind standards — IKO Nordic shingles swap in when a hail endorsement is needed. Ridge ventilation uses AirVent ShingleVent II, which already carries Miami-Dade approval.

The full install sequence: strip to the deck, inspect and replace damaged decking (max 1/8" board spacing, 7/16"–15/32" minimum thickness depending on code), back-nail at 4" O.C., seal the deck with Sealoron XT Ice & Water Barrier at eaves/valleys/penetrations (or full coverage below a 4/12 pitch), install 26-gauge minimum edge metal with 3" overlaps, seal it with IKO EdgeSeal, install the rated shingles per high-wind instructions, and finish with TAS 100(A)-tested or Miami-Dade-approved venting.

A few compliance notes worth flagging: FORTIFIED doesn't mandate ring shank nails specifically (though it does require six nails per shingle), hot-dipped galvanized nails are required within 3,000 ft of saltwater, stainless steel within 300 ft, and formal FORTIFIED certification requires a certified third-party inspection. Bottom line — moving from the standard Klaus Roofing Way to full FORTIFIED compliance takes just two changes: swap in the self-adhered IKO EdgeSeal starter strip, and use MFM Seam Tape until Sealoron XT clears testing.
